There’s a reason the NBA and other professional basketball leagues around the world have always chosen the same brand for their official game balls.
Spalding was there over a century ago at the game’s birth, with the company’s founder being contracted to design and build the very first basketball.
In the years since, Spalding has grown alongside the sport, developing new materials and designs to refine the play of the game, nurturing generations of on- and off-court legends, and finding their way into the homes and hands of loyal fans across the globe.
Spalding is owned by Berkshire Hathaway Corporation, controlled by legendary investor Warren Buffett, who wanted the valuable brand – Fruit of the Loom (FOTL).
FOTL is one of the largest manufacturers and marketers of men’s and boys’ underwear, women’s and girls’ underwear, printable T-shirts and fleece for the activewear industry, casualwear, women’s jeanswear and childrenswear with the company employing more than 32,400 people worldwide.
The company is a vertically integrated manufacturer and in 2006, Fruit of the Loom acquired Russell Brands, LLC, a global company whose brands included Russell Athletic, Brooks Running and Spalding among other names in athletic wear.
The list of brands owned by Fruit of the Loom includes mostly clothing manufacturers. Brands products also include casual apparel (Fruit Of The Loom, Jerzees, Russell Athletic), and sports equipment (through American Athletic Inc. for gymnastics apparatus) and balls manufacturers Dudley and Spalding that produce softballs and basketballs respectively.
